Test Your Vocab

EnTest is a vocab test that uses machine learning to ask you only the words relevant to you.

After 10 words, it guesses how many words you know. Keep answering for more accurate results!

Your Results page will have a study list of words you missed. You can bookmark them for later or share your results and challenge friends.

NOTICE: This site is in beta! Initial word ranking is based on older books, so 'churl' is ranked as easier than 'blog'. The more tests people take, the more accurate the rankings become! Thank you for the help!

NEW: Host moved to Fly.io be sure to set bookmarks to https://entest.fly.dev/

Study Mode: Finds the best words for you to learn and drills you on them, building your vocabulary!

History: Has a new histogram and word list, be sure to 'view results' when you're done your test!

Anki: You can now download an anki deck or pdf study list from your results page.

JiKen: Test your Kanji knowledge here!!

What is a Word?
Fitting that the FAQ needs to define a word. On this site we only look at words that get a unique dictionary entry. "Cat" and "Cats" would count as one word, as would "tickle" and "tickled".
Who is this site for?
Everyone! English learners can use it to track their vocab as they study for TOEFL and native speakers can slake their curiosity and find out how many thousands of words they know. The results section with missed words gives everyone a chance to improve their vocabulary. In general though, the algorithm works best for people that know 5,000~45,000 words.
How many words are there?
The dictionary I used has 48.6k entries from which I took a random sample of 10,000 to use on this site. This is more than enough to test native speakers that typically score around 25~40k. The much larger 'wiktionary' has the goal of including all words and has 1.1 million words! Certainly far more than any human might know.
How do I know if "I know"?
Set your own standards, the results will match accordingly. If you test for "I could use it in a sentence but probably couldn't give a definition...." then that's what the results will represent.
How long are tests saved?
The server saves the last 10,000 tests for space reasons. If your old test record vanished, that means 10,000 tests have been taken since then.
What about testing Kanji?
Ok, maybe this one wasn't frequently asked. But if you are studying Japanese and interested in a similar test for Kanji, check out JiKen. EnTest was actually a spinoff of it.
How does it work?
The system continuously reranks every single word from easy "a" to hard "vexillum". It asks questions to find out what difficulty words you know and how varied you are, then presents an estimate.

Answer 10 to start. Keep going for a more accurate estimate!
